Bell-Roberts has many faces. It's a contemporary art and design gallery, a book design studio, a bookstore and a publishing house. This makes for an interesting environment with an array of personalities rolling through our doors for different purposes. On any given day, you might run into Anushka, the Russian tourist looking for a piece of Africa to take back home (he might not find that sought-after giraffe but might just leave the gallery with an ultra modern yakuza penguin sculpture); Bob, the architect who might pop in to look for one of our books on contemporary South African architecture but instead leave the premises not only with the book but also a badge that proclaims that he is a piece of contemporary art; Libby, the dreamy-eyed design student that will leave inspired by the latest exhibition in CUBE, the emerging design gallery. Mandy, the artist with an exhibition opening down the road is frantically trying to get it ready and has just popped in to quickly check on her framing in the workshop downstairs and also see some of her limited edition prints being run off the digital art printers mid-level. Upstairs, an editor might just be debating the merits of an illustration with a designer working on a magazine or book. Though modest in size, we have enough room for all these people because what we trade in are ideas. Throughout the year, we also have the most cutting edge contemporary South African art on show in GALLERY, our main exhibition space.
